REU 2012 at Cornell University and the University at Buffalo

Undergraduate students (sophomores, juniors and seniors for Fall 2012) are invited to apply for a unique research opportunity and lab experience this summer. The 10-week-long Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program, sponsored by the National Science Foundation, offers two paid summer internships – one at NEES@Cornell and the other at NEES@Buffalo.

CSEE Graduate Student Poster Competition 2012

All graduate students of the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering are strongly encouraged to participate in this annual poster competition. The posters will be judged by a panel of CSEE faculty and a guest judge. The criteria for selecting the winning posters will be: (i) the originality of the research, (ii) the impact on the field and (iii) organization, quality and clarity of presentation. The competition will have a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winner with $250, $150 and $50 prizes, respectively, and these posters will be displayed in the Department after the competition. The winning posters will also participate in the Graduate Student Poster Competition organized by The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences of University at Buffalo.

PEER Internship Program for Undergraduates

The Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center (PEER) is offering a unique opportunity this summer for outstanding undergraduate students to participate in state-of-the-art research focused on the theme of Engineering Earthquake Resilient Communities. The ten-week 2012 PEER Summer Internship Program will introduce undergrad students to the concept of earthquake resilience and allow them to experience how many different engineering and social science disciplines interact to research the broad goal of earthquake resilient communities.

Short Course on Geotechnical Aspects of Earthquake Engineering

The aim of the course is to provide the participants an overview on Geotechnical Aspects of Earthquake Engineering. At the end of the course, the participants are expected to: (1) have an overall understanding of the Geotechnical Testing to obtain dynamic properties of soil, liquefaction potential, seismic design concepts & procedures and current practices for shallow and deep foundations, slopes and retaining walls to enable them to plan and direct the construction activity appropriately; (2) understand the soil dynamic testing procedure and methodology of seismic design to be able to execute a proper design; and (3) have a clear understanding of design methodology and the interpretation in the seismic codes while designing foundations, slopes and retaining walls. The course will be conducted at IIT Gandhinagar premises in Ahmedabad.

Masters in Risk and Emergency Management (REM) in Italy

A new Masters Programme in Risk and Emergency Management (REM) is being offered by the Understanding and Managing Extremes (UME) Graduate School of the IUSS Pavia to train graduates and professionals in the assessment, mitigation and management of extreme events, with a particular focus on those arising from natural hazards. The unique characteristics of the programme include the broad, interdisciplinary curriculum that includes topics of statistics and probability, law, economics, resource management, natural hazards and risk, finance, insurance, sociology, communication, psychology, public health and medicine, and the innovative teaching structure which allows renowned lecturers from around the world to make up the teaching body.

Natural Disaster Management – International Graduate Summer Course in Iceland

This three week intensive graduate course of 7.5 ECTS will be held in Selfoss, Iceland, by the Earthquake Engineering Research Centre of the University of Iceland, and the University Centre of South Iceland. The course is held in the wake of large scale earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, glacial bursts, flooding and glacier retreat in South Iceland. The course is open to all disciplines. The goal is to provide the participants with insight into the multi-objective and multi-disciplinary nature of disaster management, taking into account local, national, and international perspectives and cross-cutting themes. The learning will center on a contextual framework that addresses all parts of the disaster cycle through which the different professions can communicate.

UB Engineering Presidential Scholarship/Doctoral Fellowship Program

The University at Buffalo Honors College and UB Engineering have created the Presidential Scholarship/Doctoral Fellowship Program to attract the top undergraduates from the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences to continue on to graduate school with the goal of attaining a PhD.
