Shake & Quake Directions

(To print directions: select "file" then "print" from the browser menu)

The simulation consists of three steps:

  • Create the building framework with various columns heights ranging from one-story to five-stories.
  • Select a seismic event from three historical earthquakes.
  • Run the simulator and see how well your building performs.

Scene 1: Build the Foundation

  • Try to build the strongest structure with best use of resources, "cost vs. performance". Ask your teacher for budget chart so you can track your expenses.
  • Drag columns from the selection box to positions on the foundation designated with a circle.
  • Blue= 1-story, green= 3-story, & red= 5-story
  • Moving or changing columns is easy, just drag the column to a new position or replace it with another.
  • When finished, click the next button to advance to the Seismic Event scene.

Scene 2: Select an Earthquake

  • Congratulations! you've passed the basic building requirements to get to this stage.
  • There are three earthquakes to choose from:
    • Kobe, Japan
    • Northridge, California
    • El Centro, California
  • Click on the "more info" to the right for details about the event.
  • Once you've read about each earthquake, select an event by clicking the button to the left.
  • Then click the next button to start the earthquake simulator.

Scene 3: Watch the simulation

  • After the simulation runs, record the visual type of damage to the building.
  • Remember to record the description and level of the building damage.
  • Review your building design and costs, then compare that information to what happened to your building.
  • Return to the foundation scene and see if you can build a better performing building with a lower budget.
